EastAsianCulture.com is dedicated to the learning and understanding of East Asian Culture, the oldest continuous culture in the world, including music, writing, art, cuisine and media. East Asia consists of China, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Other countries that are often included are Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Burma, and Singapore.

China has historically been the dominant influence of the region from a cultural perspective. In addition, China has dominanted the realm of politics, economics, and military until the early 20th century when it receded into a long slumber. Japan rose to the fore front of economics, military and political strength in the 20th century.

In the past 20 years that has all changed. As Napoleon once stated, "Let China Sleep, For When She Wakes, She Will Shake the World". Thanks to its state controlled-capitalism hybrid model has risen to overtake Japan as the second largest economy in the world. And it is poised to become the dominant military power in the region. With this added economic strength Chinese cultural influence has once again become the dominant hub in the region back where it sat for much of history. Chinese culture is set to become a driving force around the world as it did in the Tang Dynasty.

The most popular spoken and written language in the world is Chinese and the Chinese characters. Chinese script and characters is the oldest writing system in the world has been an unifying principle across East Asia as well as Central Asia. The Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese spoken and written language are heavily influenced by Chinese characters. The Mandarin Chinese dialect is the main spoken language in Taiwan and Singapore. Cantonese Chinese is the main language in Hong Kong. A significant minority, up to 25% of the population of Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Burma speak Mandarin, Cantonese and Chiu Chow.

It is estimated over 100 million Chinese have emigrated from China to the other East Asian countries, either through business opportunities (many Chinese are strong small business people especially the Chiu Chow) or through war and famine in the past 200 years. The great number of Chinese emigrants brought their traditions and culture with thus propagating the influence of Chinese culture.
